Douglas Memorial Woods is a 22-acre parcel of woods and wetlands in the center of Eliot, donated by Susan Fleming in memory of her parents, Maynard and Marjorie Fleming Douglas, who owned and farmed this and adjacent parcels.
The trail begins behind the grange hall. The approach to the start of the trail is down a steep washed out hill, ending in a set of log steps leading into the woods. The trail heads down steeply for a good distance before turning back towards the other trailhead to the south.
The 3/4-mile loop trail meanders through a variety of habitats and vegetative communities. Walkers will find a variety of experiences in this quiet spot, dependent on the time of day, the season, and the weather. The pine plantation is sometimes gloomy and foreboding, at others it is a cool and calm oasis. Ferns burst forth fresh and green in spring. Red maples are bright in the early fall. Small streams meander through the property and the wetlands are extensive during rainy times of year. There is bog bridging over wet areas, often surrounded with standing water in the spring summer, and they can be difficult in winter if ice builds up on bog bridging.
