Penny Lake Preserve is a freshwater wetland with adjoining woodlands and open field. At the neck of the lake there is an ADA compliant handicapped accessible trail appropriate for wheelchairs and strollers which crosses a wooden bridge with bench seats. An abundant variety of wildlife may be viewed, including migratory and nesting birds, turtles, beaver, deer, and even a very occasional moose. In addition, numerous plants thrive in this varied natural habitat, from wildflowers to cattails and from hardwood trees to evergreens.
Located in downtown Boothbay Harbor, close to the YMCA, the schools, food and drug stores, and the region’s retirement community, St. Andrews Village, this preserve enjoys frequent and regular use by the community as well as visitors. It includes a 19-acre parcel purchased from the McKenneys, a 10-acre parcel donated by Tom and Richard Wilson, a 25-acre easement from St. Andrews Village, and trail easements donated by Steve and Richard Malcom as well as St. Andrews Village.
Penny Lake Preserve is dedicated to the memory of Jack Heald, whose family contributed substantially to the purchase of the McKenney property. Funds also were provided by the Land for Maine’s Future Program, US Fish and Wildlife, Fields Pond Foundation and other generous donors. The ADA compliant trail was partially funded by The State of Maine’s Dept. of Conservation Recreational Trails Program.
The Boothbay Region Land Trust (BRLT) manages the preserve and has worked to preserve the scenic beauty of the Boothbay region since 1980 through conserving land for the benefit and enjoyment of the residents and visitors.
