The Mills is a paved loop that leads users along some of Fort Kent's main thoroughfares in town. It provides an excellent opportunity to see the historic and modern sites that the town has to offer.
Starting from the Saint John Valley Heritage Trail's eastern endpoint, the trail winds south along the Fish River and then turns right (west) and crosses the river on Bridge Street. From here the trail heads north on Pleasant Road and passes Jalbert Park and the University of Maine Fort Kent, where the Acadian Archives are located. The trail continues north until it reaches US-1 and crosses the bridge over the Fish River. At the northernmost point of the loop there are three historic sites: America's First Mile Endpoint, the Fort Kent Train Station Museum, and the Historic Society Railroad Station and Dube House. From there the trail turns onto ME-161/Caribou Road/Market Street and returns to the starting point.
