Ecotat Gardens and Arboretum is an 88 acre site consisting of about 15 acres of gardens interplanted with mostly non native trees and shrubs, many with permanent labels. Each season more than 60 gardens provide a predictable sequence of blooms. Mature second-growth native trees cover a gentle slope extending from the gardens to the marsh below. Several trails descend from the gardens into the woods and interconnect with cross paths. Many types of habitat include lichen-encrusted ledge and an "amphitheater" created by a passing glacier which also left huge stone "erratics." Groves of red oak, white pine, cedar and ash can be observed. A 3/4 mile native tree trail highlights 30 mostly mature specimens with descriptive signs. A laminated guide is available for the tree trail as are other guides to all trails, current perennials and shrubs in bloom as well as garden highlights. Birders are encouraged to look for the Bird Notebook.
Ecotat is open daily from dawn to dusk, free of charge.
The gardens and arboretum are managed by Ecotat Trust whose mission is to preserve and expand the gardens and trails for the enjoyment and use of future generations. The unusual name "Ecotat" was formed by combining parts of the words "ecological" and "habitat."

Ecotat TrustEcotat is located on US Route 2 one mile west of Hermon Corner at the intersection of 2699 US Route 2 and the Annis Road. Please park in the Annis Road parking area. Visitors are asked to register at the information kiosk at the Annis Road entrance to the gardens.
Coming from I-95, take Exit 180 - Coldbrook Road. Follow Coldbrook Road to the junction of US Route 2 and turn left. Coming from ME Route 222, take Billings Road in northern Hermon and turn right at the junction with US Route 2.
