Description

Fort Williams is one of the better known parks in the greater Portland area for its picturesque views, historic features, and recreation opportunities. It is also home to the oldest lighthouse in Maine, Portland Head Light. All of these features are accessible from the Cliff Walk which leaves just uphill from the rocky beach at near the entrance of the park and follows the rocky coast around to the other side of the park. Along its way it passes the various batteries and the historic Portland Head Light while offering picturesque views of Ram Island Ledge Light and the islands of Casco Bay on a clear day.

The park has numerous picnic sites with cooking grills, many of which are accessible from the trail. Elsewhere in the park there are playing fields, tennis courts, and other historic buildings such as the Goddard Mansion, of which only the stone walls remain.

In the winter with the right conditions, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, sleding, and ice-skating are all popular activities within the park.
