Description

Gannett Woods and Wyman Memorial Forest properties will remain forever as undeveloped, open, and scenic landscapes, and will be managed for wildlife, non-intensive public uses, and for public education. Gannett Woods includes approximately 1.15 miles of undeveloped shore frontage and extensive wetlands on the 48-acre Shedd Pond in Manchester. Wyman Memorial Forest includes the top of Monk’s Hill (720 feet).

These valuable conservation lands provide habitat for a variety of wildlife, including ducks and other waterfowl, beavers and moose, and many songbirds. KLT’s lands are adjacent to the 708-acre Allen-Whitney Memorial Forest which is owned and managed by the New England Forestry Foundation. From a conservation standpoint, the three contiguous parcels, totaling over 850 acres, have an even higher ecological value than if they were if they were isolated from each other.

Other Information

Snowmobiling is allowed on the designated trail in Gannett Woods. ATVs or motorized vehicles of any kind are not permitted. Fishing and hunting are permitted. Dogs: Out of respect for hikers and small children, dogs should be under voice command or on a leash. Please pick up after your pets.

Trail Tips

Plan Ahead and Prepare
Know your limits – it’s okay to turn back. Your home is the ultimate destination, not the summit.

Trailhead Information

Wyman Forest: A trail crosses the property from the access point on Route 17 to privately owned fields on the north side of the property and links to Kennebec Land Trust (KLT) Gannett Woods trail. From Manchester go on Rt. 17 W for 2.4 miles (just across the town line into Readfield), Case Street Cemetery will be on your right. Park in front of the cemetery on Route 17 in Readfield near the Manchester line. From the cemetery walk west approximately 300 yards. A KLT sign marks the access point (trail begins halfway between CMP poles #88 and #89). From Readfield: Take Route 17 E, the cemetery is on the left, 1.8 miles after US 135 E.

Gannett Woods: A one mile loop on the west side of Shedd Pond starts at an old woods road off of Scribner Hill Road. The KLT registration box is not visible from the road. This trail connects to the Wyman Forest trail at an old woods road. Take Route 17 to Route 135. Go north on Route 135 for 1.2 miles to Scribner Hill Road. Turn southeast on Scribner Hill Road for 1 mile. Look for a woods road on the right (south side) of Scribner Hill Road. Cross a stream with a granite bridge, and look for the blue blazed trail, the trail enters the woods on your left.
