Description

The 56-acre Griggs Preserve is owned by the Midcoast Conservancy and is a haven for wildlife. While visiting, keep an eye out for deer, turkey, porcupine and pileated woodpeckers. Trails wind through beautiful forestland to a scenic vista overlooking the Sheepscot River. Look right towards the reversing falls at Sheepscot Village and left to the railroad bridge in Wiscasset.

White Shad Run (1.5 miles): This trail loops 1.5 miles through this parcel of huge pines, stonewalls, rock outcrops and woodpecker hideouts.

Blue Heron Leg (0.25 miles): A short loop off the main trail continues along the river and up to the NW corner of the property through early successional forest and signs of past land clearing.

Red Salmon Loop (0.15 miles): This is another side loop off White Shad Run that goes around a natural spring and bog at the SW corner of the preserve, and then passes by porcupine dens. Ferns and mosses are abundant, and a carpet of wildflowers blooms here in the spring.

Other Information

There are no facilities at this property. Leave No Trace: please carry out what you carry in and do not take souvenirs. Though the property borders the railroad tracks, they are private. For your own safety, please stay off the tracks. As hunting is permitted, both hunters and hikers should use extreme caution during hunting season.

Dogs should be under control of their owners at all times; please clean up after your pets.
