Several trails cross the preserve. A trail heading south from the parking area, and left at the junction near the privy, leads to a large wetland, 0.3 miles from the trailhead. Starting on the same trail to the south, but heading right at the junction near the privy, a trail leads to Highland Lake, a total distance of 0.8 miles from the trailhead. A trail heading north from the parking lot offers another route to Highland Lake, or the option to make a loop.
The intent is for this research forest to become a place that offers visitors a glimpse into sustainable harvesting and the importance of a forested watershed; and a space for long-term research projects related to woods, wildlife, soil and water.

Turn left on Middle Ridge Road, and continue straight after 1.6 miles onto Upper Ridge Road. Go another 2.2 miles and take a left on Common Drive. There is a parking lot at the trailhead 0.8 miles down Common Drive on the left.
