Description

The Long Creek Trail currently stretches about a mile along the northern banks of Long Creek. Hiking the trail in the winter or spring, when the leaves are off the trees, provides the best opportunity for great views of the creek, though several spots along the trails provide nice views all year. Trail itself is a marked, mostly flat packed dirt path with occasional steeper pitches, bog bridges, and erosion control features.

As the creek narrows, the trail joins a well graded section, near a kayak launch, and then leads nearly due west to culminate at a viewpoint. From here one can look across to the wooded bank where the treaty creating South Portland was signed. Backtrack to get to the parking lot or follow the path through the open field up to the road leading back to the parking lot. Please respect the privacy of the nearby residences.

Other Information

Brick Hill was once home to a brick factory that produced the materials used to build homes along Portland’s Western Promenade.

The Long Creek Trail was made possible through the generous support of the City of South Portland, the trail building efforts of the Maine Conservation Corps and the West End Trails Committee, a sub-committee of the South Portland Land Trust dedicated to making the west end of the city friendlier to pedestrians and cyclists.

In the future, the hope is to improve Long Creek Trail further and connect it with Westbrook Street and the Clark's Pond Trail.

Trail Tips

Travel and Camp on Durable Surfaces
Stick to established trails and campsites. If there's no trail, try to walk on rock, gravel, or snow and spread out so that your group doesn't create a trail.

Trailhead Information

From Westbrook Street in South Portland, take Western Avenue about 0.5 miles to the entrance to Brick Hill on the right. Turn right into the entrance of Brick Hill and bear left as you go up the hill. Take Lydia Lane on down to the Opportunity Alliance building and parking. Look for the sign marking the trailhead along the treeline and take the steps down the slope to the trail.
