Mariners Memorial Park consists of 23 acres of fields, shoreline, salt marsh, bog, mixed hardwood forest, wild grasses and flowers. A broad upland meadow fringed with woods stretches from the park's entrance to the shore.
A trail to the left of the park entrance, called Memory Lane, travels between the meadow and woods. 40 years ago, garden club members cleared this area and planted it with shrubs and small trees attractive to birds. Continuing from Memory Lane a mowed trail encircles the park, called Mariner's Mile as two laps around the loop is exactly one mile in length.
A picnic area with tables is located near the knoll, uphill from the parking area. By the shore, a granite monument honoring the mariner's lost at sea marks the planting of the Bicentennial Tree in 1962.
A boat launch area is available for launching canoes, kayaks, and other small recreational boats, and to provide access to the flats for clam diggers. The boat launch is tidal, please be sure to check a tide table before departing, as Long Cove drains to mudflats, preventing boaters from returning to the boat launch at low tide.
HISTORY
In 1961 the Town voted for the Evergreen Garden Club to become the owner of land that was at the time a part of the Morey Farm. Since then many people have helped to make Mariners Memorial Park a wonderful place. 654 plants, shrubs and trees have been donated and planted; the benches and picnic tables were built by members of the community; the gardens are maintained by volunteers. The creation and maintenance of this scenic and restful part of Deer Isle has truly been a labor of love by numerous residents across the Island.
