Gorgeous in every season, the Charles E. Swett Trail is well worth taking a few moments to walk. The trail is short, but bring a book or a lunch, and take your time watching the waters of Estes Lake. For a longer journey, considering linking this trail with the other trails in the Massabesic Experimental Forest (Ida Jim Road to Clayton Carl Trail, Atlantic White Cedar Loop, B.C. Jordan Trail, and Littlefield Trail).
The Charles E. Swett Trail is dedicated to a Forest Manager with the US Forest Service, who was stationed at the Alfred Headquarters from 1948 until his retirement in 1983. Charles assisted in marking the boundary lines and establishing research plots on the Forest during that 35-year period. He worked closely with Town Officials, the Maine Forest Service, and individuals residing near the Forest to ensure that this land would always be open, and remain in a pristine condition for those who sought a “wilderness experience”. Charlie’s comprehensive knowledge of the history and natural features of this forest, along with his enthusiasm for seeing that the forest be used to its fullest potential, continues to attract the attention of current land managers and most of the researchers wishing to use this forest.

Cross over 111 and continue on Kennebunk Road for another mile, and then veer right onto Mouse Lane. Continue on Mouse Lane for 2.7 miles. Make a hard left onto Whichers Mills Road. Follow Whichers Mills for 1.1 miles, and look for the Massabesic Experimental Forest sign, small parking area, and trailhead kiosk on your right.
