The Old River Road Trail is an easy, double-track trail along the East Branch Penobscot River. About halfway between each trailhead there is a spacious campsite.

Pets must be leashed at all times, and are not allowed in or near the huts.
Permits are required for overnight parking and stays at huts. Reservations are made through the National Park Service.
Fires are permitted only in designated sites and require a permit from the Maine Forest Service (Ashland Office, 207-435-7963).

Katahdin Woods and Waters National MonumentFrom I-95 take Exit 264; turn west onto ME-158 which shortly joins ME-11. Bear right on ME-11 and travel 9 miles to Patten. Leaving Patten, turn left on ME-159, the Shin Pond Road. Continue 26 miles on this road to the Matagamon Wilderness Store and Camps. Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument can be accessed just beyond the camps on the left.
Follow this road for about 0.8 miles to the northern trailhead. To reach the southern trailhead, continue another mile, turn left and follow this road about 0.4 miles to its end. The historic 1857 Thoreau Checkerberry-tea Campsite can also be reached from this trailhead.
