Description

The trail from the parking lot leads up a gentle slope through the woods on an old quarry road. 0.1 miles up the road the Glacial Erractic Trail (blazed orange) splits off to the right, travelling 0.5 miles through the woods before reaching a viewing platform at the top of quarry.

0.25 miles up the quarry road is the primary junction. The trail to the right leads to a viewing platform. The trail to the left leads to historic structures of note atop the quarry; the Grout Pile Trail (blazed blue) skirting the edge of the quarry; and the Overlook Trail, which winds along the foot of the quarrying operation to the modest Webb Cove overlook.

Other Information

A preserve brochure and trail map, as well as a self-guided nature tour of Settlement Quarry, are available on the Island Heritage Trust website.

HISTORY

The quarry was most active in the 1920s. It reopened briefly in the 1960s, during which its last major shipment was sent to Washington D.C. for the John F. Kennedy Memorial in Arlington National Cemetery. (The "Sherwood Pink" granite used for the JFK memorial in Arlington Cemetery was actually quarried on nearby Crotch Island and then transported to the Settlement dock and shipped from there.). The quarry closed permanently after a final effort around 1980.
