Description

This 4.3-mile trail system starts on Woodman Road, beyond the trailhead parking. There are several trails branching off of Woodman Road accessing Talking Brook and Meadow Brook. Some trails follow the streams, while other trails wander over hills through forested landscapes. The trail systems on either side of Woodman Road can be linked to allow hikers and runners options to accumulate mileage. All trails are blazed with color-coded plastic blazes, with each trail section having a different color.

On the Talking Brook (west) side of the road, there is a stream loop that passes by small falls in the brook, a beaver pond, and interesting rock formations.

On the Meadow Brook (east) side of Woodman Road, the trail travels the brook to a waterfall at the far end. All trails loop back to Woodman Road.

The Talking Brook trails can be wet and muddy seasonally, especially near the brooks. There are occasional bog bridges, foot bridges, and stone steps across some of these sections, but hikers should be prepared for wet and muddy conditions.

Other Information

  • Talking Brook Public land requires dogs to be on a leash, and dog owners to clean up and pack out their pet's waste.
  • The section of Woodman Road hikers start on is used to access a private residence. Given the density of private residences around this public land unit, please respect private property by staying on trail, walk your dogs with a leash, and clean up pet waste.

Please note: these trails used to be two separate trail systems, Big Falls Preserve and Norumbega Trails. They were consolidated in 2023, taken on by the Maine Bureau of Public Lands, and redesignated as Talking Brook Public Land.

Trail Tips

Minimize Campfire Impacts
Use only small pieces of dead and down wood for campfires and let them burn down to ash. Please extinguish your campfire before leaving.

Trailhead Information

From Exit 75 on the Maine Turnpike, follow ME-202 W for 3.7 miles, and turn left onto ME-231 S. Then make an immediate left turn on Rowe Station Road, and follow Rowe Station Rd. for 1.4 miles to Cobbs Bridge Road. Turn left on Cobbs Bridges Road and follow it for a half mile, then turn right on Meadow Lane. At the stop sign at the end of Meadow Lane, turn left on Woodman Road. The trailhead and a parking area are at the end of Woodman Road, marked with a Public Lands kiosk with a map of the trails and property information. The road is closed to traffic beyond the trailhead kiosk and parking area.
