Description

The University Bike Paths are paved pathways reserved for non-motorized uses. They connect the University of Maine campus in Orono to Old Town through the DeMeritt University Forest, along fields, passing nearby the university's research farm. Because the paths are paved and relatively flat with few exceptions, these are highly accessible trails suitable for any age or ability level.

The University Bike Path also provides connections and access to the many other woods roads, single track, and ski trails that make up the DeMeritt Forest trail system.

Trailhead Information

The University Bike Path can be accessed at several points.

Stillwater Avenue: There is limited parking available on Stillwater Avenue, 0.5 miles from the traffic light at the intersection with College Avenue.

Univserity Farm Road: There is street side parking on the University Farm Road (dirt road), which leaves College Ave 0.2 miles from the Stillwater Avenue intersection and traffic light. The Bike Path leaves from the road on the left and right approximately a half mile up the road before going up the hill to the farm.

University Campus: The bike path headed toward Old Town leaves at the bottom of Hilltop Road near the tennis courts and athletic fields. Parking however is at the top of the Hilltop Road, in the large parking lot. Park at the northern end of the parking lot near the gazebo.

The new short section of bike path leaves from the southern end of Hilltop Parking lot near the back of the Little Field Ornamental Trial Garden.

Other Access: The bike path can also be accessed from the corner of Perkins Avenue and Jefferson Street in Old Town or from the University Park Road off College Avenue; however, public parking does not exist at these locations.
