Burnt Mountain is located just north of McCarty Field in the northwestern part of the Park. The Park Tote Road passes the northern side of the mountain. Views from the summit are surprisingly panoramic. The relatively level country north of Webster and Telos Lakes and the bulk of Katahdin to the south are impressive. The net elevation gain on this trail is approximately 600 feet.
From the Burnt Mountain Picnic Area, follow the blue-blazed trail gradually uphill southward. At 0.2 miles pass site of an old watchman's cabin. Ascend steadily and at 0.8 miles the trail bears left and then begins to ascend steeply after 1.1 miles. The trail ends at the summit after 1.3 miles. Panoramic viewpoints are just south of the summit.
