From the trailhead it is a short climb up a hill to the Island Coves Picnic Pavilion, which offers a unique view of Race Point and Fall’s Island, and a bird’s eye view of Straight Bay and Denny’s Bay in the background.
To the north of the parking lot, a hike to the end of an old road follows game trails to the end of the point, where there is a panoramic vista of the islands of Straight Bay.
Another trail travels from the trailhead along an old gravel road to a mudflat, crossing to the Island Coves island, accessible at low tide (check a tide chart here). Canoes or kayaks may be launched here at high tide, but the currents around Falls Island to the north of Island Coves are extremely fast moving and powerful, and only experienced salt-water paddlers or those with a Registered Guide use the Island Coves hand-carry boat launch. Paddlers should remain in Nutter and Morrison Coves to the south.
Island Coves is open dusk to dawn, from May to October, by appointment only. It is a part of Cobscook Shores, a system of fifteen waterfront parks that are privately owned and/or maintained by Cobscook Shores INC., a family funded Maine charitable foundation. The parklands offer public access and recreational use including walking, picnicking, hiking, biking, camping, and paddling in Cobscook Bay.

From Lubec, head west on ME-189 for 5.1 miles from the junction of Main Street and Washington Street in the Lubec, to Crows Neck Road on the right. From US-1 in Whiting, head east on ME-189 for 5.6 miles to Crows Neck Road the left.
Go 0.4 miles on Crows Neck Road and turn right on Lead Mines Road, then after 0.2 miles turn left on Straight Bay Road. Continue on Straight Bay Road for 2.4 miles then take a left on Lyons Road. The parking lot at the trailhead is 1.4 miles down Lyons Road at the road's end.
