Description

Runnals Hill is composed of just under 4 miles of trails, which lead up the hill, and past the Colby Garden before entering the forest of maple, birch, aspen, and oak trees. The paths offer a quiet escape from nearby downtown Waterville, and Colby's campus. During winter months, trails are maintained primarily for cross-country skiing, and are utilized by the Colby nordic team, as well as recreational skiiers.

Part of the trail follows the perimeter of the hill, which is surrounded by forest. Footpaths marked along the hill cut through the tall grass that covers Runnals. Following the trail up the hill and then heading south into the forest will lead to the power lines. The power lines emerge at Lincoln Street, just before Maine General Medical Center-Seton. Following the three short paths north into the woods from the hill emerge behind Colby College residence buildings.

Other Information

Trails are groomed for cross-country skiing from the first snow fall until March 15. During this time hikers are not permitted on the trails.

Trail Tips

Travel and Camp on Durable Surfaces
Stick to established trails and campsites. If there's no trail, try to walk on rock, gravel, or snow and spread out so that your group doesn't create a trail.
