This wild 1,140 acre preserve protects the Atlantic salmon habitat of the Ducktrap River. Its mature hemlock groves are home to painted trillium, Blackburnian warblers, and many other flora and songbirds. In the winter, tracks of moose, deer, coyote, and bobcat may be spotted.
The Ducktrap Trail begins on a snowmobile trail, and continues along it for 1.4 miles. The Ducktrap Trail then departs from the snowmobile trail on a foot path to the left (south). 0.2 miles from this junction, the trail continues on the opposite side of the Ducktrap River. There is NO BRIDGE over the Ducktrap River. The river is crossable at low water, but use caution. A replacement will be going up soon. The trail continues across Tucker Brook 0.5 miles later (there is no bridge here). The trail then reaches the 1.2 mile Ducktrap Loop shortly after crossing Tucker Brook. Out, around the loop, and back again makes for a total hiking distance of 5.6 miles.
