Description

The Eastern Trail is a 62 mile multi-use, non-motorized greenway, that connects Bug Light in Casco Bay, South Portland to Kittery, Maine. Approximately thirty percent of the trail is off-road, and the trail is a part of the East Coast Greenway which will eventually connect Calais, Maine to Key West, Florida, approximately 3000 miles. The Eastern Trail is currently composed of 21 miles of off-road trails on the former Eastern Railroad bed with the remainder 41 miles on public roads.

The entirety of  the Eastern Trail is built to ADA standards. The trail surface varies between pavement and stone dust/gravel. Most of the trail is 10-12 feet wide, with some sections with an 8-foot width.  There is a 30-inch opening between the bollards at entrances to keep out motorized vehicles, but wide enough to allow access for wheelchairs.

The off-road section connecting Biddeford, Arundel, and Kennebunk provides over six miles of trail for walking, running, biking, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing. The trail passes through unique forests along the former Eastern Railroad bed. The trail is extremely flat, the surface is hard packed stone dust and is suitable for road bikes or mountain bikes. The trail crosses the Maine Turnpike in Kennebunk on a uniquely designed bridge that was opened in 2011. This is the only pedestrian bridge that crosses the Maine Turnpike.

People that are allergic or afraid of dogs should have a little more space on this narrow Trail upon approaching owners with their dogs and the owners need to respect not everybody can deal with their dogs it would be nice to share the trail without being afraid of a dog

The trails are great, but there needs to be a little more space between the bollards at crosswalks and bridges. I'm handicapped and ride a standard size 3-wheel trike (a Terra Trike). I have to stop and lift my bike above the bollards because my handles don't fit through. In another couple of years, I will no longer be able to lift my bike over them...
