Meduxnekeag Race Course and Paddling Route

This paddle trip is the route used for the Meduxnekeag River Race each May. While not for beginners, this moderate paddle is a pleasant mix of fast flatwater and one stretch of class II rapids easily navigated by paddlers used to whitewater, and travels through a remote pond with good opportunities to see wildlife.

Description

The route begins on Mill Brook, near an industrial mill. For the first 1.5 miles, it flows with a strong currant, though is all flatwater, as it twists and turns. There are numerous beaver lodges, and it is good duck habitat as well.

Shortly after passing under a railroad bridge, the Meduxnekeag meets Mill brook, coming in from the left. Green Pond is reached two-thirds of a mile past the confluence. The shores of the pond are empty of camps, with only one house visible far back in the woods.

Past the pond, the Meduxnekeag flows gently for about a mile and then reaches some ledges. These ledges in the middle of the river make for class II whitewater for a couple of miles.

Past the rapids, the current continues more smoothly but still strong. Past Carys Mills, several tributaries come into the Meduxnekeag, causing the river to widen significantly by the time it reaches Houlton. In downtown Houlton, the river passes under several bridges with a strong current and gentle waves. The take-out is at a public access boat ramp just below the last bridge, on the right.

Safety
Be a Safe and Respectful Paddler
Paddling conditions will vary according to the weather and season, so always exercise caution and always wear a lifejacket. With good judgment and proper equipment, the risk associated with paddling can be minimized. Respect the natural world and the rights of landowners, and be considerate of other outdoor enthusiasts. Paddlers should seek to avoid causing erosion, trampling vegetation, disturbing wildlife, and harming water quality.
