Description

The Mill Brook Preserve trail system opened in 2016 on 120 acres of forested land along Mill Brook in Westbrook. Mill Brook is notable for the largest annual migration of alewife fish from Casco Bay to Highland Lake. The fish migration can be seen while hiking along the trail generally in late May and early June. This secluded and hilly forest valley is peaceful and feels remote while just minutes from Maine's largest urban center.

I think we just missed the migration of the alewives, sadly as we didn't see any fish! We started at the northern trailhead off Methodist Rd and 302. We enjoyed hiking along the river and seeing the small rapids and waterfalls along the way. We made it to the northern fish pool before we turned around and headed back to the car. No bugs and the weather was cool and overcast, which made for comfortable hiking conditions.

The trails are very icy in shaded areas and makes hills dangerous to navigate. I would wait until summer to bring younger children or casual hikers.

There is no better place in the Portland area to see the massive migration of the alewives. Several thousands pool up at some of the small rapids along the brook!

Great place to see alewives migrate in spring. Easy access for children.
