This short, easy loop meanders through old-field pines, mixed conifer-hardwood stands with extensive bog-bridging, and along a wild section of the Passagassawekeag River. This section of the river, less than a quarter mile from the trailhead, is the last section of rapids before the river becomes tidal, and has ferns and mosses growing along its banks. Old stone walls, apple trees, and multi-trunk pine trees offer evidence of past farming. Brown ash trees, a slow-growing tree used by Wabanaki people for basket weaving, are found along the trail.
This preserve is a part of the Passagassawakeag Greenway, a system of trails along the undeveloped upper reaches of the river (known by locals as “The Passy”), which flows into Belfast Harbor.
