Zak is BRLT’s largest preserve, stretching from ME-27 all the way to the River Road, and straddles the watershed of Wildcat Creek in the western half and its headwaters in the eastern half. The preserve acts as an important piece of the wildlife corridor between the Sheepscot and Damariscotta Rivers. Its 208 acres encompass a large open field (one of the few remaining on the Boothbay Peninsula), salt marsh, wetland, bird habitat, and extensive woods. Approximately 2.2 miles of year-round trails are particularly suited to snow shoeing and cross country skiing in the winter months.
In 2003 Michael and Roxanne Zak donated significant funds toward the purchase of 149 acres, to which they added 52 acres of their own land, thus protecting and preserving this significant natural habitat forever. More than half of the land, bordering ME-27, was zoned commercial and could have been developed for business or industrial use. Instead, we can enjoy this gateway into the community with its open fields and woods, meandering creeks, and abundant wildlife.
Zak serves as the southern terminus of a larger network of conserved land called the River~Link system. River~Link provides a recreational trail, wildlife corridor, and greenway that connects the Sheepscot and Damariscotta Rivers. The River~Link trail begins at Zak Preserve and extends about 7 miles to its northern terminus in Newcastle at Dodge Point Preserve, managed by Coastal Rivers Conservation Trust.
The Boothbay Region Land Trust (BRLT) manages the preserve and has worked to preserve the scenic beauty of the Boothbay region since 1980 through conserving land for the benefit and enjoyment of the residents and visitors.
