Description

The Deer Isle-Stonington Nature Trail consists of a 0.3-mile boardwalk, all open to the public, which winds its way through forest and forested wetland.

A  0.2 mile section of the trail, beginning at the tennis courts trailhead, is wheelchair-accessible and loops back to the tennis court. The boardwalk in this section is 3.5-feet wide, and almost entirely flat, with only a minimal grade briefly heading down from the trailhead and upward at the exit.

There is an outdoor classroom in the middle of the trail network, with plank outdoor seating, a bird feeder, and a display board, and a second outdoor classroom is located at the entry."

Across the school driveway from the boardwalks there is a 0.2-mile trail which leads to the high school parking lot. This trail is wide and flat, with primarily a woodchip and sometimes grassy surface, with a few areas where there is forest floor with some minimal roots.

Trail Tips

Travel and Camp on Durable Surfaces
Stick to established trails and campsites. If there's no trail, try to walk on rock, gravel, or snow and spread out so that your group doesn't create a trail.

Trailhead Information

Traveling south on ME-15, the school campus driveway is on the left about 3 miles down from the causeway (the entry point to Deer Isle). Turn into the driveway and continue past the high school to the tennis courts on the left. Park on the grass by the tennis court. The ADA section of trail begins here to the right of the tennis courts.

The northern-most trailhead is located to the left of the school itself. Cars may be parked in the school parking lot to access this trailhead.
